My Favorite Mae Jemison Quotes

February 1, 2017 by mybookboost

As we celebrate Black History Month in February, I am sharing two quotes by Mae Jemison, the first African American woman astronaut. She would be a great leader for both kids and adults to learn more about. I first read about her just few months ago.

Mae Jemison has many awesome quotes, but I picked two of my favorite to share today.

The first quote goes well with the idea of a growth mindset. And I enjoy the simplicity and message behind the second quote.

“What we find is that if you have a goal that is very, very far out, and you approach it in little steps, you start to get there faster. Your mind opens up to the possibilities.”

“Some of the most fun people I know are scientists.”

I have a resource in my TPT store that highlights Mae Jemison. There is a fact sheet, a place to think of quotes Mae might say, and three different puppet options. Click on the picture below to see more.

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Biking Log Printable

January 4, 2017 by mybookboost

Bike more! It’s always a goal of mine. If you can relate to this, you might enjoy this free printable. It’s a log to keep track how many miles you’ve biked.

Biking is a great way to get some exercise. And, if you do errands on your bike instead of using your car, it’s good for the planet too. Double bonus.

Just be sure to take as many safety precautions as you can, such as wearing a helmet, wearing bright clothing, using hand signals, and watching for vehicles.

I keep track of how many miles I bike each day and then add the miles up as I go. The circled number is my total miles biked.

Click here to download this free printable via Google docs. If someone can comment whether you were able to print it or not, that would be helpful. Thanks!

Here’s to lots of miles on the bike seat in the year 2017! Be safe, everyone!

What Can Be Recycled: School Edition

December 29, 2016 by mybookboost

Do you ever wonder which items can actually be recycled? Sometimes I put things in the recycling bin, wondering if the workers have to fish them out at the recycling center. Or I throw something in the trash, thinking it probably can’t be recycled.

I’ve compiled a list of what can and can’t be recycled- classroom edition. Some of the information may vary depending on where you live, of course. But, this is a great chance for teachers to model recycling and conserving resources at school.

For more on what classroom items can be recycled, read the rest of my post over on Hojo’s Teaching Adventures.

If You Give a Mouse a Brownie

December 7, 2016 by mybookboost

Laura Numeroff has done such a nice job with all of her “If You Give a…” books. I was excited to read her newest addition to the series- If You Give a Mouse a Brownie. It was published on October 18, 2016.

If You Give a Mouse a Brownie is a circular, cause and effect story, just like many of Numeroff’s other books. This one is good for little ones to read because the vocabulary is at a great level for Kindergarteners and 1st graders, especially. The storyline is entertaining and fun. The illustrations, by Felicia Bond, are as cute as ever.

This book might be a great Christmas or birthday gift for a 5,6, or 7 year old. Maybe throw in a box of brownie mix too!

Below are some extra materials to go along with the story, in case you’d like to check them out:

Hopefully you get a chance to read this latest book in the series soon, if you haven’t yet!

Resources That Give

November 29, 2016 by mybookboost

Give someone the gift that keeps on giving-  a genuine compliment.

Teachers Pay Teachers is highlighting “Resources That Give” this holiday season. I wanted to share the story behind the very first resource I uploaded to TpT four years ago.

compliments tally sheet

I created this “Compliments Tally Sheet” back in 2006. I had a feeling that I wasn’t giving equal attention to all of my students. I wanted an easy way to make sure I took notice of all of my 2nd graders.

compliments tally sheet

After trying out a couple of different methods of keeping track of how many times I complimented each child, I found using tally marks was the easiest method.

Example compliments:

“You worked hard on that.”

“You didn’t give up on that math problem.”

“I notice that you shared your red marker.”

“Wow, what nice handwriting!”

Keep the tally sheet on a clipboard to make it easily accessible. You can see who might need a little extra attention if you haven’t complimented them recently.

I would suggest writing the children’s names on the left hand side of the sheet. Then, make copies of the sheet so you can have more copies available when you fill up the current sheet. It can be used in any grade level or by parents or homeschooling families.

I hope it’s useful to you as you help increase the self-esteem of your students, one genuine compliment at a time.
