You Get What You Get Book Review

August 24, 2015 by mybookboost

Have you heard the saying “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”? I first heard it when my son was in preschool. Very useful phrase!

you get what you get

In this book, Melvin the squirrel learns the rule at school and then eventually tells his family the rule at home. I would highly recommend this book for preschoolers through 1st grade. They seem to understand the concept quickly when it’s introduced. And you can use it if kids start to complain about wanting a different color of something, etc.

you get what you get

Overall, this is an adorable story with a simple message. It would be especially helpful for preschool and primary kids who might have a tendency to complain and throw a tantrum if something isn’t exactly the way they wanted.

For some kids, this book may also be a springboard for a discussion about different things you can do if you aren’t happy with something. Kids could discuss trading or taking turns instead of throwing a fit.

Have you had the chance to read this one yet?

My All-Time Favorite Pin That I’ve Found

June 24, 2015 by mybookboost

http://garrdenoflove.blogspot.com/2012/11/garage-door-makeover.html
Here it is- my all-time favorite pin. These aren’t my actual garage doors, but the doors of the original pinner.

I first saw this pin a few years ago. We did this to our garage doors at our previous home and we’ve added the hardware to our current garage doors. The carriage look adds nice modern character to the doors.

I’ll share my experiences with finding the hardware. They mention in the blog post that they found the hardware at Home Depot. For me, the easiest way to locate it was on ebay by searching “carriage garage doors”. I think it ended up costing us about $25 for our three-car garage, which was well worth it. A lot of bang for the buck!

Thank you to www.garrdenoflove.blogspot.com for originally sharing this! They used to have a tutorial when you clicked on the pin, but it doesn’t seem to be there anymore.

The pin is on my Home board on Pinterest.

Amazon is also carrying the hardware.

What do you think? And, can you pinpoint your all-time favorite pin?

DIY Father’s Day Card

June 16, 2015 by mybookboost

Everyone loves handmade cards. Here’s a fun one to make for Father’s Day.

Father's Day card

Make a mustache out of black paper (the thicker the paper the better). Tape the mustache onto the card with Scotch tape. Next, write “Dad” on the card. I used letter stamps.

Possible message for inside of the card:
We “mustache” you to have a wonderful Father’s Day!

Our Teacher’s Having A Baby Book Review

June 10, 2015 by mybookboost

If you yourself are having a baby or if you know a teacher who is, this is a great book to read to a primary class. I read this book to my 2nd grade class eight years ago when I was pregnant with my son. Ah, memories.

our teacher's having a baby book

The actual story isn’t too exciting, but it does a great job of getting the message across of different things that may happen when your teacher is expecting a baby. It helps kids understand that it’s normal for teachers to go on maternity leave. And, many times the teacher will come back before the school year ends.

As it gets closer to your due date, you can have your class do some of the different activities mentioned in the book, like guessing the baby’s name, etc. It also has some good vocabulary that the kids may not have heard before, like “offspring”.

Some libraries have this book. It’s also available through third-party amazon sellers. In any case, I think you’ll find Our Teacher’s Having a Baby by Eve Bunting a great read aloud. Congratulations to the expecting mom!

These Sky Color printables help with the skills of improvising and thinking outside the box. There are no wrong answers with these sheets. An example question is “what if you didn’t have green to color a tree. How might it look?”
