Tips to Prepare for Home Showings

March 10, 2015 by mybookboost

It’s nearing the busy time of year for buying and selling homes. Last year at this time, we were preparing for our 850 mile move. First on the agenda was selling our house. Of course, a big part of that is making sure your house looks great for the showings, which can be especially challenging with kids.

house showing

Usually your realtor will let you know at least a few hours ahead of time if a showing is scheduled. Some realtors use a system in which you receive a text asking if the house can be shown during a window of time and you reply yes or no via text message. You’ll want to leave your house about ten minutes before the scheduled showing time.

Here are some tips you may find useful as you prepare for realtors showing your home to potential buyers:

Dishes

1. Use disposable plates and cups for a couple of hours before the showing. Then, you can toss them in the trash and you won’t have dishes in the sink.

2. Put any dishes that don’t normally go in the dishwasher in there for the time being if you don’t have time to wash them by hand. Just don’t forget to take them out later.

Clutter

3. If there are a few things laying around and you don’t know where to put them, stick them in the trunk of your vehicle(s). You definitely want to make your home look as clutter-free as possible. For us, it was usually toys that we were trying to stick into the trunk.

Pets

4. If you have a dog and live near Petco, you can take your dog there to get them out of the house during the showing.

5. Do as many errands as you can while you’re out. If the whole family is in the vehicle and you have a dog, family members can take turns going into places one or two at a time so someone can stay with the dog.

Fresh Scent

6. Spray your house with Fresh Wave natural odor eliminating spray or light a Fresh Wave candle before the potential buyers arrive. I love Fresh Wave because it has all natural ingredients and it truly smells fresh and clean.

Good luck! We only had to go through about ten or eleven showings before someone made an offer. What a relief it was to not have to keep the house “show ready”. Do you have more tips to add to the list?

The Pinterest Board I Visit the Most

March 2, 2015 by mybookboost

linky parties

Can you guess which of my Pinterest boards I visit the most?

It’s actually my “linky parties” board.

I go there almost every day to check with blogs I know have regular linky parties.  Yes, I might have a little linky party addiction. But, it really is fun to link up and see what things are happening on different blogs.

This post is probably most useful for TPT sellers and other bloggers, but even those who aren’t either of those may enjoy checking out some of the different linky parties.

There are a few different kinds of linky parties out there:

  • link resources from your TPT store (most of the time hosted by TPT sellers)
  • link your latest blog post on any family friendly topic (many times hosted by homeschool bloggers or mom/crafty/lifestyle bloggers)
  • themed linky parties in which you link up after having created a post to follow the theme

I suggest creating a “linky parties” board on Pinterest. You’re welcome to start by going to my board and re-pinning parties you think you might want to join to your own linky party board. That way when you find more you like, you can easily add them to your own board.

My Linky Party Pinterest Board

Some of the links on my board were pinned a few months ago. You might have to click on the home page of the blog if you are taken to an old post. I’m slowly updating these so the none of the links take me to old posts.

You may be wondering, do linky parties work? For me, the answer is yes. There have been times that I’ve sold an item from my TPT store within minutes of adding it to a linky party. Also, you can really extend your blog reach by linking up content-rich blog posts to homeschooling and mom/crafting/lifestyle blogs!

One thing I haven’t done is join many of the themed linky parties. I’ve joined a lot of the “Book Talk” ones, but it’s a goal of mine to join some of the other themed parties out there.

Do you have a favorite linky party?

The Museum Book Review

February 23, 2015 by mybookboost

Wow! Once again, I am recommending a book that was illustrated by my new favorite children’s book author and illustrator, Peter H. Reynolds. This time it’s The Museum, which was written by Susan Verde. Reynolds and Verde partnered to create this unique story.

the museum
The main character visits an art museum and shares her feelings as she views different pieces of art. You and your students may even recognize some of the art represented in the story (The Scream and Starry Night are two notable references).

It’s really interesting to watch the girl experience different emotions as she moves from art that makes her feel lonely to art that makes her feel giddy, etc.

Here are just some of the great vocabulary words in the story:
stifle
analyze
elation
rythym
giddy

Also, here’s one comprehension question you can ask during or after reading the story:

“Can you pretend you’re the girl making silly faces at the sculpture? What would that look like?”

I highly recommend this heartwarming book for both kids and adults. It’ll make you want to schedule a visit to your nearest art museum asap. Until that visit, maybe look around the art displayed in your home and see how it makes you feel.

Temperature Quilt

February 16, 2015 by mybookboost

Are you looking for a fun way to keep track of the weather in your area? Enter the “Temperature Quilt”. My friend Kitty of Bad Knitty Kitty inspired me to make this printable Temperature Quilt after she said she was making a real blanket in which she knits a square each day corresponding to the high temperature for that day. I thought it’d be fun to do a similar project with my family using paper and crayons.

Teachers or families can use this for daily calendar time. You color in the corresponding color to represent the expected high temperature for each day. A color printer is not required, but can be used to print out your key, if you like. Your quilt can be started any time of year. I started the one in the picture around Oct. 1, 2014. This is showing the daily high temperatures for Iowa during the last few months.

quilt
Daily High Temperatures in Iowa (Oct. 2014 through Jan. 2015)

Different options for you to choose from:
– 5 days per week or 7 days per week
– Print with a color printer or use your own markers, crayons, colored pencils, or construction paper squares to represent the colors

Get started by preparing your key with the corresponding colors you want to use. Students can take turns being the one to color in the corresponding color to match the expected high temperature in your area that day. Tape sheets on the wall connected together to show trends month after month, with the earliest sheet at the top.

www.weather.com is one way to find past temperatures (or the expected high for that day). Go to your city and click on “Monthly”. www.timeanddate.com also has high temps from the previous week.

I recommend keeping the crayons or markers you use separate in a baggie or cup so you won’t have to hunt for the right colors.

Writing some of the dates directly on the quilt helps keep track of the boxes. I wrote the 1st of each month at the bottom of the box for that day. For example, on Oct. 1, I wrote 10-1-14 at the bottom of the box.

This is a fun activity for school, homeschool, or with your own family. Here it is in my TpT store, in case you want to check it out there. I love how everyone’s quilts will be unique depending on where they live. What colors would be on your quilt lately? Lots of purples here.
