Knuffle Bunny

February 7, 2015 by mybookboost

knuffle bunny

Knuffle Bunny is truly a classic. This story written by Mo Willems is a favorite in our house. The storyline about Trixie losing her bunny is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Older kids love to read it again and again as well, especially if they read it when they were younger.

Trixie and her dad walk to the laundromat, so it’d be a good time to talk to kids about what a laundromat is, if they don’t already know. Also, what is a block? Kids who live in the country, especially, might not know what a city block is.

I’ve read a lot of books about kids having a special stuffed animal, but this one is the funniest. It will have you chuckling and smiling.

I also love the unique style of the black and white photos mixed with drawn characters. This would be a great gift for an expecting mom. We actually got it as a baby gift five and a half years ago from one of my friends.

I’ve read all three books in the Knuffle Bunny series (there is also Knuffle Bunny Too and Knuffle Bunny Free). But, the original is still my favorite, for sure. What do you think?

Valentine Cards

January 30, 2015 by mybookboost

Where do you usually buy Valentine cards? We did Target last year. But, what we got at the Dollar Store this year (see picture below) is an even better deal. They had a pretty good selection of cards, plus 40 baggies for $1. We’re going to put a few candy hearts in the baggies.

So, my vote on best deal for Valentine cards (other than making your own)? The Dollar Store.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Love always,
Carrie

p.s. how was the selection at your Dollar Store?

Ish Book Review

January 23, 2015 by mybookboost

ish

You may be wondering, what does it mean when something is “-ish”? Basically, this story says it is something that closely resembles something. For example, if a room is pretty clean, but not perfectly clean, you could call it “clean-ish”. In the context of the book, it’s referring to when you draw. Kinda like my drawings of horses. They look horse-ish.

Peter H. Reynolds is fast becoming one of my favorite children’s book authors. The takeaways from his stories are useful for both adults and children. Ish is no exception. And I’m kind of a sucker for a book that rewards effort and perseverance over perfection.

I also really enjoy what happens between the sister and brother in the story. Without giving away too much, Marisol really looks up to her big brother Ramon.

“Tree-ish” is one illustration from the book.

Have you come across this book yet? If you haven’t read it yet, I’d recommend finding it fast-ish. (;

Mini Books in Happy Meals

January 20, 2015 by mybookboost

This promotion at McDonalds runs until about Jan. 22, 2015. Happy Meals will include one of four mini books with an activity to go with the book. We were on a road trip visiting my sister this past weekend and were pleasantly surprised when we found out the Happy Meal prize was a mini book. Score!

Happy Meal Books

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff came with a small game with markers and a dice.

The other three books that may be included are:

Big Nate: In A Class By Himself  by Lincoln Peirce
Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses  by Kimberly and James Dean
Flat Stanley Goes Camping  by Jeff Brown

Even though this promotion only lasts until Jan. 22, maybe some stores will have extra books that they’ll hand out even after that date. Feel free to report in the comments if your McDonalds was still giving these out in Happy Meals after Jan. 22, 2015. Thanks!

Gotta love this kind of prize instead of a plastic toy!

Greater Estimations Book Review

January 13, 2015 by mybookboost

How many hairs does a cat have? That is one of the questions Greater Estimations poses. This is a wonderful, unique book. It talks about estimating large numbers, length, weight, area, and volume, etc. in a way that’s fun and easy to understand. I’d recommend it for 3rd grade and above.

The book explains at least three different estimation techniques:

  • eye training (training your eyes to recognize groups of ten)
  • clump counting
  • box and count

Each page has “hints” at the bottom to help with the concepts.

Estimation is such an important lifelong skill. Every person subconsciously uses it every day. I have a few different estimation resources in my TpT store. Estimating Dice and Dominoes is one of my favorites. Have you read Greater Estimations by Bruce Goldstone?
