Prayer Cups

March 20, 2013 by mybookboost

I saw a Prayer Jar on Pinterest that inspired me to make one for my family. Basically, you pick a name from the jar every day and pray for that person. I thought it would be a fun way to get my kids in the habit of praying and thinking positive thoughts. And it would be nice for my husband and I to have this as part of our daily routine as well.

The one from “Melissa’s Projects” used names and pictures of their friends and family members glued to popsicle sticks, which was neat. But, I decided to just write the family and friend’s names on the sticks, which works great too.

Steps to Making a Prayer Cup:

1. Gather 2 cups, popsicle sticks, and a Sharpie

2. Brainstorm friends and family to pray for

3. Write the names on the sticks

4. Pick a time of day to pick a stick from the cup  (we chose to do it right after dinner)

5. Everyone in the family takes turns saying a short prayer or positive thought about the person who was picked for that day

5. Put the stick in a different cup after you’ve prayed for that person so you can go through everyone once before starting over

Eventually I added “What I’m Thankful For” and “Choose Anyone” sticks to the mix. You can continually be adding new people or other themes. We also put in our own names, along with our dog and fish.

It melts my heart when we forget and one of the kids remembers. They say “we didn’t pray!” very dramatically.

I love this, and I think giving them foundation of family prayer when they’re young can provide exponential benefits when they’re older because they’ll always draw from those memories/experiences.

I’m visiting from Sincerely Paula’s No Rules Weekend Blog Party. 🙂

Oh wow, what a great idea! I love the simplicity of it and how they can transfer it to another cup when they’ve prayed for them.

Love how they remind you that you didn’t pray! So sweet. This is a lovely idea/tradition that they can take into their own homes someday.

Thanks so much for linking up to “Making Your Home Sing Monday” linky party today! 🙂

Thanks! I agree…it would be really cool if they continued this tradition someday. (=
