Temperature Quilt

February 16, 2015 by mybookboost

Are you looking for a fun way to keep track of the weather in your area? Enter the “Temperature Quilt”. My friend Kitty of Bad Knitty Kitty inspired me to make this printable Temperature Quilt after she said she was making a real blanket in which she knits a square each day corresponding to the high temperature for that day. I thought it’d be fun to do a similar project with my family using paper and crayons.

Teachers or families can use this for daily calendar time. You color in the corresponding color to represent the expected high temperature for each day. A color printer is not required, but can be used to print out your key, if you like. Your quilt can be started any time of year. I started the one in the picture around Oct. 1, 2014. This is showing the daily high temperatures for Iowa during the last few months.

Daily High Temperatures in Iowa (Oct. 2014 through Jan. 2015)

Different options for you to choose from:
– 5 days per week or 7 days per week
– Print with a color printer or use your own markers, crayons, colored pencils, or construction paper squares to represent the colors

Get started by preparing your key with the corresponding colors you want to use. Students can take turns being the one to color in the corresponding color to match the expected high temperature in your area that day. Tape sheets on the wall connected together to show trends month after month, with the earliest sheet at the top.

www.weather.com is one way to find past temperatures (or the expected high for that day). Go to your city and click on “Monthly”. www.timeanddate.com also has high temps from the previous week.

I recommend keeping the crayons or markers you use separate in a baggie or cup so you won’t have to hunt for the right colors.

Writing some of the dates directly on the quilt helps keep track of the boxes. I wrote the 1st of each month at the bottom of the box for that day. For example, on Oct. 1, I wrote 10-1-14 at the bottom of the box.

This is a fun activity for school, homeschool, or with your own family. Here it is in my TpT store, in case you want to check it out there. I love how everyone’s quilts will be unique depending on where they live. What colors would be on your quilt lately? Lots of purples here.
